Terracotta- Classic, Contemporary, and Everything In-between
As we hurtle towards summer, readying ourselves for BBQ season, we look to the russet warmth and arid texture of Terracotta to spruce up our patios and refresh the front porch.
If you live in Victoria, you’ll know that Cup Weekend is the unofficial “Pres” to Christmas (and if you needed to Google that, you’ll see it’s “drinks before the main party” or “a neurological disorder”- opt for the first explanation.) It’s at this time of year that you may look around the perimeters of your current dwelling and realise it’s looking a little shell-shocked after winter’s bite and all the excitement of Spring’s blooms has calmed down.
Cup Weekend also marks the shift between the endless months of miserable weather and several head-scratching months of unpredictable weather. Anything you have planned to “get done” in the garden may (literally) need to be rain-checked. That’s where the BRILLIANCE of pots and planters truly comes into play.
You can set yourself up under cover, pop on some tunes, drink in hand, and garden until your heart’s content.
And, if you’re elsewhere in Australia, perhaps it’s time to claim the first weekend in November as one solely for the garden, a sort of May Day for the Southern Hemisphere, celebrating all things Spring and the coming of Summer. Nurseries and garden centres across the land proclaim it as the lore, worse ideas have existed...
Anyway, back to the *terracotta (*meaning “earth-baked”). The clay that’s rich in iron oxide and fires (traditionally) to a reddish brown. Soft peaches, bright tangerine, and white-wash finishes are all part of the spectrum, and just as beautiful.
Layering your terracotta pots over the years and building up an eclectic collection, or sticking to a particular silhouette, are two ways to approach your assemblage. The beauty lies within the mix-n-match qualities of terracotta; tonal, natural, and adorning our world since civilisation began.
