"The Balearic Islands are an archipelago in the western Mediterranean Sea, near the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The archipelago forms a province and autonomous community of Spain, with Palma de Mallorca being its capital and largest city.
Formerly part of the Kingdom of Mallorca, the islands were made a province in the 19th century provincial division, which in 1983 received a Statute of Autonomy. In its later reform of 2007, the Statute designates the Balearic Islands as one of the nationalities of Spain. The official languages of the Balearic Islands are Catalan and Spanish."
That's what Wikipedia has to say about the incredibly picturesque Balearic Islands, but we're here to be inspired by these visually cinematic Mediterranean outcrops, the main islands being Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.
A dry, hot and salty climate it's the kind of "place" whose gardens and scenery can seamlessly translate into many Australian landscapes.
While more traditional and natural elements (think rustic stone buildings, azure water and white sandy beaches) are sure to put you in a creative flow- there's a treasure trove of luxe hotels, beach clubs and villas to mine for inspiration.
An easy guide to getting the Balearic look is with plantings of olives, palms, rosemary, hibiscus, flowering sage, prickly pear and other succulents. Words like ramshackle, meandering and relaxed should be used to set your design intention.
And, naturally, pots and planters are essential for building an island oasis with beauty gleaned from this truly spectacular destination.
If that all sounds too hard, you know where you're going on your next euro-summer-vacay, see you there!
