Twin Peaks- The Power of Two

A common theme in design of any kind is symmetry, whether in its implementation or absence. Georgian architecture is extreme in its use of symmetry, whereas one of Mid-Century Modern's signature elements is perhaps its complete lack of it.

One thing is for sure, symmetry brings with it a sense of order and with that- formality.

The French are renowned for their formal gardens. Bordered, balanced and even in every way; arranged in perfect formation to control the landscape and where your eye (or feet) will travel.

Most often, a French formal garden features a central focal point such as a fountain, pond or sculpture, flanked by pathways, orderly vegetation and clearly defined hedges of all sizes. Nothing is left to chance so that "nature" can shine bright in the spotlight of one seriously stage-managed garden plot.

So how does one go about accessing a little of that French zen in one's Jardin?

  • Well, repetition is a key player in achieving symmetrical harmony, and the magic number here is two.
  • One is great, but two (in this case) is where it's at.
  • Twin planters with matching foliage, flowers or trees are a great start.
  • A word you should become best friends with is "FLANKING" because you'll want to flank things literally to the left and right of the centre.

And should you require a focal point, mid-garden, we have just the ticket by way of fountain, bird bath or statue.

Even if your garden, porch or balcony is more on the rambling wild side, employing a touch of symmetry here and there will give it more intention with just a couple of simple adjustments that are easily done.
